Also, a little trick We learned about the Ivory soap (and this only works with Ivory as far as I know). If you put it on a paper plate in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds it will expand (it looks like a science experiment) but take it out and let it cool.
It cools it will crumble into a powder. This makes it perfect to add to your homemade laundry detergent. No shredding is needed which is cool.

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe 3 {Borax Free}
Ingredients:
4 – 4 oz. bars Kirk’s Original Coco Castile Soap Fragrance-Free
4 lbs Baking Soda
3 lb. 7 oz. Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, 1 box
3 lbs OxiClean Baby, 1 container
28 oz Epsom Salt (optional)
Instructions:
- Grate castile soap into very small bits.{it is important you grate the soap into tiny pieces to enable readily dissolve in Washing Machine)
- I used my food processor to grate the soap (with the grater attachment) and then pulsed it with the blade into small bits. I found that processing one bar at a time and adding ¼-1/2 cup baking soda to soap flakes during the pulsing stage helped the soap separate into smaller bits. { You may use a Grater instead of food processor}
- Mix all ingredients in a large container and stir.
- Use your new laundry detergent – 1 or 2 Tablespoons per load.
- this detergent is naturally low foaming due to its ingredients; perfectly safe for regular or HE machines.
Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe 4

- One dry cup of Borax
- 1 dry cup of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
- optional: a few drops of tea tree for disinfecting (esp. good for cloth diapering)
Instructions:
- Grate soap into the saucepan-
- Add 2 cups of water- stir, dissolve into a five-gallon bucket
- Add Borax, washing soda and tea tree if using.
- Mix melted soap liquid into a bucket and stir quickly.
- Add water to about 3/4 of the way to top- stir and put a lid on.
- Set overnight.
- Measure out 1/2 cup of liquid for light loads and 1 cup for normal loads
Yay!!! – The result is cheap liquid detergent, that is environmentally friendly and natural detergent!
Conclusion
On the question of how to deal with deep stains, I follow this process, I sprinkle some homemade detergent to the stain and rub the fabric to lather it up. Let it set for a few minutes and throw into the wash. Add some water, scrub to agitate, then let sit until I launder them again.
Works great and smell nice too. it is also important to note that this doesn’t fade clothing at all. It is perfectly gentle on clothing and safe.
It is also important to state that just as it is for everything else, it is best to experiment with different Quantity of the ingredients in order to get the actual amount that works well or turn out best for you.

Don’t Want to Make it?
We usually make our own detergent, but for times when we are traveling or I haven’t had time to make it, I’ve found a few good brands of eco-friendly laundry detergent that actually work (all received an “A” by the Environmental Working Group):
- Ecover Zero Laundry Detergent– Works well, relatively cost-effective and low/no risk of developmental or reproductive toxicity and cancer according to the EWG.
- Emma Eco-Me Detergent – Also rated well by the EWG and cleans up to 64 loads for $12. Good scents.
- Planet Natural Detergent – Relatively eco-friendly and cost-effective at $9 for 32 loads.
Obviously, the best option is to make your own if possible but those natural alternatives are a good choice if you aren’t able to make your own or don’t want to.
Note: No time to make your very own laundry cleaning agent? You can always acquire all-natural brands like these.
